About Antalya Döşemealtı Carpets :
Döşemealtı Carpet is handwoven on local looms. With a rich history, Döşemealtı Carpet is world-renowned. Even today, it is possible to see a carpet loom in every home in Döşemealtı. The reason for this dates back to ancient times. The Teke Yörüks, who came to Anatolia after the 12th century and settled in Antalya and its surroundings, spread their culture, which gave the region its name. Weaving, which is one of the most important handicrafts of Antalya today, is also a part of the Yörüks' nomadic way of life. Nomadism requires housing and other items to be lightweight and easily transportable. Weaving that meets this requirement has gained great importance.
They weave floor carpets with unique motifs from Döşemealtı. However, they generally weave carpets in sizes of 80x120 cm, called "çeyrek," 125x180 cm or 220 cm, called "seccade," and 75x300 cm, called "yolluk." The yarn for the carpet, which has a warp and weft of wool, is prepared after the sheep are sheared. Women wash the wool and separate it into fibers by hand, then spin it with a spindle and twist it with a spindle rod. After the twisting process is complete, the women dye the yarn with root dyes obtained from nature. The dyed yarn is used as the warp and weft in the carpet weaving process. Döşemealtı carpets are woven with the Gördes knot. A master weaver who weaves carpets for eight hours a day completes a 125x180 cm seccade carpet in twenty days. The colors used in these carpets are red, blue, navy blue, burgundy, green, black, and white. Red, blue, burgundy, and navy blue are seen as the background color. Carpets woven in the Döşemealtı region according to the background composition are named Halelli, Toplu, Kocasulu, Dallı, Dallı-Akrepli, Mihraplı (Camili), Akrepli, Terazili-Toplu-Yastıklı, Bayraklı, Dokuz Toplu (Yıldızlı), Kuleli Yıldızlı Toplu, Laleli Mihraplı, Koyun Haplı Dallı, Heybe Toplu, and Ambarlı. The oldest Döşemealtı Carpet available is Halelli, which is on display at the Antalya Museum today.
